A zazenkai (座禅会?), literally means “to come together for meditation”. A zazenkai is usually less intensive and of shorter duration than sesshin. It may comprise a short sitting meditation session, with or without teisho (public teaching or dharma talk). During zazenkai, there may also a private interview with a teacher, called dokusan.
Zazenkai is guided by a jikijitsu or jikido through the use of bells – usually the rin and the kinhin bell and the wooden clapper known as a taku. Zazenkai includes short periods of kinhin (walking meditation).
